The Electricity Market Act Bill – A New Electricity Market Design for the German Energy Turnaround?

With its Electricity Market 2.0 project, the German government wants to take an important step towards enhanced integration of renewable energy sources into the electricity market. Renewables in 2015 already constituted about one third of Germany’s electricity consumption. The challenge is to integrate an increasing amount of intermittent renewable energy with feed-in priority into the system, in a secure, cost-efficient and sustainable way.

Committee Hearing on Proposed Bill on the Digitisation of the Energy Turnaround

On 13 April, the Committee on Economic Affairs and Energy of the German Bundestag held a public hearing on the Act on the Digitisation of the Energy Turnaround. A key component of this bill is the Metering Point Operating Act (Messstellenbetriebsgesetz – MsbG). Despite agreement in many areas, the experts also remained critical on various aspects of the bill.

Revision German Renewable Energy Sources Act – BMWi Starts Consultation on Draft EEG 2016

The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy has started the consulting process on the 2016 revision of the German Renewable Energy Sources Act EEG. With this bill the government will use auctioning as the standard system to establish support levels for renewable energy, starting mainly in 2017.

Bavarian Constitutional Court Hearing on Controversial 10H Minimum Distance Requirement for Wind Power Plants

On Tuesday, the Bavarian Constitutional Court heard the parties on the controversial 10h minimum distance requirement for wind power plants. Federal Cabinet approves Act on Continued Liability for Nuclear Decommissioning and Disposal Costs and Commission for Review of Financing of Nuclear Phase Out

Today the Federal Cabinet approved the “Act on Continued Liability for Nuclear Decommissioning and Disposal Costs”. Further it also approved the establishment of a “Commission for the review of the financing of the nuclear phase out” (Kommission zur Überprüfung der Finanzierung des Kernenergieausstiegs (KFK).

Federal Cabinet Approves More Underground Cable

On 7 October the Federal Cabinet (Bundeskabinett) approved changes of draft bill amending various laws concerning power line extension. The draft bill inter alia gives priority to underground cables instead of overhead lines in case of new high-voltage, direct current transmission lines (HVDC).
