State of Baden-Württemberg Provides Online Information on Wind Conditions in Forest Areas

The state of Baden-Württemberg wants to increase the share of onshore wind power in the state energy mix from to 10% until 2020, including in forest areas. Based on a wind power decree enacted in May last year and the Windatlas Baden-Württemberg, which provides information on wind conditions in Baden-Württemberg, the state Forest Research Institute has compiled a statewide study on the wind conditions of potential locations in forest areas.

Two maps give guidance on locations with wind conditions of 5,25m/s in 100m above ground respectively of 5,75m/s in 100m above ground, providing information concerning the following three aspects:

  • Areas in which wind power turbines are excluded
  • Areas in which wind power turbines are subject to certain restrictions
  • Areas in which wind power turbines are generally possible, but have to undergo an individual permitting procedure

The Forest Research Institute points out that the maps supplement the state wind power decree of May last year, which takes precedence and should therefore be consulted.

The criteria for the classification into one of the above-mentioned three categories can also be downloaded. The map display is based on nature protection and forest related criteria. Special criteria concerning the protection of the wood grouse (Auerhuhn) have been taken into account.

Further assistance can be obtain on the webpages of the State Office for the Environment, Measurements and Nature Protection (LUBW).
