ZVEI Demands Fundamental Reform of Renewables Act and Points Out Export Opportunities

With the Central Association of the Electrical Engineering and Electronics Industry (ZVEI) another major association called for a fundamental reform of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), requesting a gradual introduction of more demand-based remuneration for green electricity.

Indisputably, the current regulatory framework was unsuitable for the energy markets, ZVEI said, urgently demanding a new market design, which enables a sustainable, cost-efficient expansion of renewable power plants while providing incentives for investment in modern power plants and efficient and smart grids. This is in line with demands for a reform of the energy regulatory framework made prior to respectively following the Federal Election on 22 September 2013 by other major organisations like the Federal Association of the Energy and Water Industry (BDEW) and the Umbrella Organisation of the German Industry BDI.

ZVEI also called for incentives for more energy efficiency in the private, industrial and public sector, saying enormous energy savings potential could thus be tapped. Similar demands were voiced prior to the election by the German Confederation of Skilled Crafts (ZDH). The Act on Fiscal Measures Promoting Energy-Efficient Renovations of Residential Buildings was the only bill of the 2011 energy legislative package, which the Federal Council (Bundesrat) did not approve of.  Lengthy efforts to mediate finally failed. Loans at reduced rates of interest supporting energy-efficient renovations are provided by the state-owned KfW Development Bank (Regarding two recent studies on the costs, benefits and results of energy-efficient renovations, please click here).

ZVEI Vice-President Michael Ziesemer called the German energy transformation towards a mainly renewable energy supply (Energiewende) feasible and highlighted the opportunities, not least export opportunities for Germany. Hence the Energiewende should have the highest priority for the new government, he said.
