Fraunhofer IWES: Combined Virtual Renewable Power Stations Can Provide Grid Stability and Cover Demand

Combined virtual renewable power stations can provide 100% grid stability and, together with storage facilities, cover demand fully, Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology (IWES) said, following three year research.

Yesterday Fraunhofer IWES showed in a live presentation how several wind farms, PV and biogas power plants can be combined as a virtual power plant with the help of new intelligent information and technology techniques and how this plant can contribute towards grid stability today. Based on a specially developed scenario for the future with a high spatial resolution, the Fraunhofer IWES team also demonstrated that 100% grid stability can be provided with a virtual combined renewable power plant and that demand can be covered at any time if they are combined with storage facilities, the institute said.

The three-year research was carried out together with the following partners: CUBE Engineering GmbH, Deutscher Wetterdienst (German Metrological Service), ENERCON GmbH, ÖKOBIT GmbH, Leibniz Universität Hannover (Leibniz University, Institute of Electric Power Systems), Siemens AG, SMA Solar Technology AG, SolarWorld AG and Agentur für Erneuerbare Energien (German Renewable Energies Agency).

The project was sponsored by the Federal Environment Ministry and built on the project “Virtual Combined Renewable Power Station I”, in which the feasibility of an energy supply based totally on renewable energy sources was demonstrated, Fraunhofer IWES pointed out.
