Röttgen Proposal to Link Phase-Out of Nuclear Energy to Renewable Energy

Norbert Röttgen (Christian Democratic Union – CDU), Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, wants to link the phase-out of nuclear energy in Germany to energy demand. Nuclear power plants shall be shut down as soon as nuclear power can be replaced by renewable energy sources.

Mr Röttgen said that he will base a decision about the extension of the life-span of the nuclear power plants on energy scenarios. The scenarios shall be developed by his ministry together with the Ministry for Economics and Technology, headed by Mr Brüderle (Free Democratic Party – FDP). These scenarios shall be part of the energy concept of the government. A draft shall be presented before the summer break. The final energy concept is expected to be adopted by the coalition government in October.

“We do not need more nuclear power, but we will need it longer than prescribed by the arbitrary deadline set by the coalition government consisting of the Social Democrats and the Greens headed by former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder”, Mr Röttgen said. He called nuclear power “a bridge technology”.

With his proposal to link nuclear power to the expansion of renewable energy, Mr Röttgen takes on those in his party that are in favour of a general extension of the life-span of nuclear power plants for approximately ten years, Financial Times Deutschland writes.
