Hackers Steal and Sell Emission Allowances

A large-scale data theft has paralysed the official registers for emission trading in many European countries, Financial Times Deutschland (FTD) reports.

According to FTD, the relevant authorities such as Deutsche Emissionshandelsstelle (DEHSt) are currently reviewing their computer systems after hackers obtained access to accounts via phishing e-mails last Thursday. The hackers then stole and quickly sold emission allowances. German companies are among the victims. The damage cannot be quantified yet, but one single medium-sized company alone is said to have lost emission rights in the amount of EUR 1.5 million.
