CDU/CSU Want to Increase Funding for Electric Cars

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), two of the ruling government parties, want to increase state funding for electric cars, thus accelerating their market launch.

The parties propose indirect aid, especially improved funding for R&D. The CDU representative Andreas Jung, responsible for electromobility, said funding had to double. Funds that have been allocated so far amount to EUR 500 million. Besides, tax incentives for the owners of electric cars and special depreciation treatment for employers who provide battery chargers for electric vehicles are also under discussion. According to Mr Jung, subsidies for the purchase of electric cars or reduced VAT are presently not an option. The public sector, primarily the German Parliament (Deutscher Bundestag), shall convert their fleets to electric cars.
