Röttgen Proposes Grid Summit

While visiting Hannover Messe (Hanover Fair) Federal Minister of the Environment Norbert Röttgen (Christian Democratic Union – CDU) suggested a grid summit in order to expand the grid to accommodate more renewable energy.

“We could have made more progress, we need to accelerate”, Röttgen said. The grid summit should be seen in connection with the new energy concept of the government announced for autumn. Participants of the grid summit should come from the wind energy sector, engineering, utilities, IT companies, and the political sector.

Grid expansion was critical to achieve the targets for a supply with renewable energy, Röttgen said. Until 2020 renewable energy shall account for 30% of the German energy supply. In the past, Mr Röttgen repeatedly said his vision was an almost 100% renewable energy supply by 2050.
