Federal Network Agency Publishes Monitoring Report 2009 for the Electricity and Gas Market

The Federal Network Agency for Electricity, Gas, Telecommunications, Postal Service and Railways, the German regulatory agency for these areas, published its monitoring report 2009 for the electricity and the gas market.  The report shows that market liberalisation has progressed and competition in the energy market has gained momentum.

President Matthias Kurth pointed out the increasing competition in the gas market. “While private households could not yet chose their supplier three years ago, they had the choice between a limited number of suppliers in 2007.  Today, they can choose on average between twelve suppliers per post code area.  Hence, households are starting to change their supplier.  The number has trippled in 2008 compared with 2007”, he said.

Still, supplier changes are less frequent in the gas compared to the electricity market.

Mr Kurth called on consumers to excercise their right to change the supplier, pointing at significant savings potential that cost comparisions had indicated.
