Norbert Röttgen Designated New Minister for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety

Dr. Norbert Röttgen (CDU – Christian Democratic Union) will take over as Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety from Sigmar Gabriel (SPD – Social Democratic Party) in the second Coalition Cabinet headed by Chancellor Andrea Merkel (CDU), which is supported by the Christian Social Union of Bavaria (CSU) and the Free Democratic Party (FDP).

Mr Röttgen, a lawyer by profession, has served as his party’s chief whip since 2005. He is regarded as a close confidant of Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Thus far, energy and climate policy have not been the focus of Mr Röttgen’s work.  In April 2007, however, he stated in a CDU paper on climate change: “Climate protection is of utmost importance.  There is still time to take appropriate measures to avoid the worst consequences of climate change.  If we miss this opportunity, climate change will globally lead to substantial changes of the environment with massive social and economical consequences.”
