BMWi Establishes Raw Materials Policy Unit

In light of the growing importance of a coherent raw materials policy, the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) announced that it established a subdepartment “Raw Materials Policy”.

The announcement coincided with the publication of the European Commission’s latest communication on commodities and raw materials.

The new unit will be responsible for a wide range of raw material-related issues, including domestic raw material supply, recycling and international access to raw materials. The department will initially focus on the development of bilateral raw material partnerships.

In October last year, BMWi founded Deutsche Rohstoffagentur (German Mineral Resources Agency), which operates as a new specialised unit of the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources in Hanover.
