France Needs to Import Electricity from Germany and Other European Countries

Since 18 of its 58 nuclear power stations are down due to maintenance or age, France, traditionally an exporter of electricity, is forced to import electricity from Germany and other European countries.

The annual average availability of French nuclear power stations will fall to 78%, a spokesperson for the state-owned utility EdF said.  By international standards, this is a comparably low level.

EdF blames a strike earlier this year, which delayed maintenance work.
