EEG 2012: Non-binding List of Raw Materials Pursuant to Biomass Ordinance

In cooperation with German Biogas Association (Fachverband Biogas), the Bavarian State Institute for Agriculture (Bayerische Landesanstalt für Landwirtschaft – LfL) has compiled a non-binding list of raw materials pursuant to the new Biomass Ordinance that entered into force on 1 January 2012.

The Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) provides for fixed feed-in tariffs in Germany. According to the recent amendment (EEG 2012) feed-in tariffs for biomass depend on the raw materials used to generate electricity. Raw materials are divided into three classes. Annexes 1 to 3 of the Biomass Ordinance that also entered into force on 1 January list the individual energy output. For electricity generated from raw materials listed in Annex 1 the basic tariff is paid. If electricity is (also) generated from raw materials listed in Annexes 2 or 3, the tariff rises (proportionately).

Hence, the classification of the raw materials used is of great importance for the payment feed-in tariffs. The compilation of LfL and the German Biogas Association is intended to provide a non-binding guideline.
