National Electromobility Initiative Submits 2nd Report – Government Programme Electromobility

The National Electromobility Initiative (Nationale Plattform Elektromobilität – NPE) submitted a second report to Chancellor Angela Merkel containing an analysis of the potential of electromobility  and strategies to achieve the government’s goal of having one million electric cars on German roads by 2020. The government in turn announced to adopt a “Government Programme Electromobility” (Regierungsprogramm Elektromobilität) on 18 May 2011.

Tight Timeframe for Accelerated Transformation of German Energy Infrastructure

The German Federation and the Federal States want to phase-out nuclear energy earlier than previously envisaged. They intend to accelerate the transition towards renewable energy supply in Germany. The government will present the necessary draft acts in June, Chancellor Angela Merkel said after an energy summit with the 16 state premiers from the Länder.

Energy Policy Appeal – Ad Campaign in Favour of Nuclear Power and Coal

Many big newspapers today carried full-page advertisements to influence the German debate over the upcoming energy concept in favour of nuclear power and coal. Forty-one high-ranking German CEOs and business representatives signed the “Energiepolitischer Appell” (energy policy appeal) with their position for a preferable future energy policy. The move comes ahead of the energy concept the German government under Chancellor Angela Merkel is to publish at the end of September.

Ministry for the Environment Examines Auction of Extended Operating Times of Nuclear Power Plants

The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Protection and Nuclear Safety is currently examining the possibility to auction off an an extended operating time for the existing 17 German nuclear power plants, a number of newspapers reported. Auctions would be made to be subject to the safety of the respective plants.

Election Standoff in NRW – Consequences for Energy Policy Unclear

The preliminary official result of the state election of Germany’s most populous state North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) show the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) of the incumbent prime minister of NRW, Jürgen Rüttgers, and the Social Democratic Union (SPD), lead by Hannelore Kraft, locked in a standoff.  As with this result the CDU/FDP coalition in Berlin under Chancellor Angela Merkel no longer has a majority in the Bundesrat (Federal Council), upcoming federal energy legislation will be also be affected.
