EnBW Wants to Shut Down Unprofitable Power Plant Units with Total Output of 686 MW in Southern Germany

EnBW AG has informed the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) and the four German transmission operators (TSOs) of its intention to shut down four power plant units with a total output of 668 MW at its power plant locations in Marbach and Walheim in Southern Germany. The TSOs will now have to conduct a system security review as to whether and when the power plant units can be shut down or are deemed “system-relevant” for the security of supply

EnBW Acquisition by Baden-Württemberg Violated State Constitution

The acquisition of a 45.01% stake in EnBW AG by a subsidiary of the state of Baden-Württemberg, NECKARPRI GmbH, in December 2010 violated state parliament’s constitutional budget rights, the State Constitutional Court of Baden-Württemberg ruled. The ruling is considered not to affect the deal as such.

Baden-Württemberg’s New Environment Minister Suggests Sale of EnBW’s Transmission Network

In an interview with the newspaper Frankfurter Rundschau, the  new Green Environment Minister Franz Untersteller of Baden-Württemberg suggested that EnBW considers a sale of its transmission network to fund investments in renewable energies and new efficient gas-fired power plants.

Baltic 1 Offshore Wind Park Starts Operations

The Baltic 1 offshore wind park officially started operations on 2 May 2011, the operator EnBW AG announced. Baltic 1 is Germany’s first operational commercial offshore wind farm, and is located 16 km north of the peninsula Darß/Zingst off the coast of the state of Mecklenburg Western-Pomerania.

Lawsuit Filed Against State’s Acquisition of EdF Stake in EnBW

State of Baden-Württemberg to Acquire EdF Stake in EnBW

This morning the state government of Baden-Württemberg and the board of directors of the French utility EdF both approved the acquisition of EdF’s 45.01% stake in EnBW AG by a subsidiary of the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, NECKARPRI GmbH. EnBW AG is based in Karlsruhe in the state of Baden-Württemberg, and is Germany’s third largest utility.

Energy Policy Appeal – Ad Campaign in Favour of Nuclear Power and Coal

Many big newspapers today carried full-page advertisements to influence the German debate over the upcoming energy concept in favour of nuclear power and coal. Forty-one high-ranking German CEOs and business representatives signed the “Energiepolitischer Appell” (energy policy appeal) with their position for a preferable future energy policy. The move comes ahead of the energy concept the German government under Chancellor Angela Merkel is to publish at the end of September.

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) invited the heads of the four major German utilities E.ON AG, RWE AG, Vattenfall and EnBW for talks about an extension of the operating times of the 17 German nuclear power plants next Wednesday.
