Government and States Agree on How to Proceed With Nuclear Location Search Act

The search for a permanent nuclear waste disposal site starts again, but shall not exclude the salt dome in Gorleben, Lower Saxony. This is the result of a meeting of the federal government, the federal states and the political parties yesterday. They agreed to submit a bill concerning a “Location Search Act” (Standortsuchgesetz) for a permanent nuclear waste disposal site as soon as possible to parliament. The bill shall be adopted before the summer break, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) said.

Minister Altmaier: EEG Cuts Needed – or Energiewende Costs Will Reach Trillion Euro Mark by 2040

Without amendments to the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), the costs for the German Energiewende could add up to a trillion Euros “by the end of the thirties of this century”, Federal Environment Peter Altmaier told the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ).

Opposition Gains Majority in Federal Council Following Narrow Election Win in Lower-Saxony

The Social Democrats (SPD) and Alliance ’90/The Greens secured a narrow election win by one seat in Lower-Saxony over Angela Merkel’s Conservative Party (CDU) and their Liberal allies (FDP). The opposition parties now hold the majority of seats (36 out of 69) in the Federal Council (Bundesrat).

SPD Position Paper on New Statute for Permanent Nuclear Waste Disposal

Some months ago the German government and the federal states (Länder) agreed to restart the search for a permanent German nuclear waste disposal site. The opposition Social Democratic Party (SPD) has now suggested a new statute (Endlagerverfahrensgesetz – Permanent Disposal Procedure Act) to coordinate the search process.

Exploration of Gorleben as Permanent Nuclear Waste Disposal Site to Start Again

10 years after the exploration of a salt dome in Gorleben as a permanent disposal site for nuclear waste was suspended, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) shall again start examining the suitability of the Gorleben site.
