German, Austrian And Swiss Energy Associations Demand Improved Conditions for Pumped Storage Power Plants

The Federal Association of the Energy and Water Industry (BDEW), its Swiss counterpart VSE and the Austrian Energy Association Österreichs Energie agreed to work together to improve the transnational coordination concerning the construction of pumped storage hydro power plants. The associations demanded fair regulatory conditions for these kind of power plants.

Fee Reduction Makes Operation of Vattenfall Hydro Power Plant Attractive Again

For the first time in 10 years Vattenfall’s 120 MW hydro power plant in Geesthacht operates again at full capacity, storing excess wind power. Vattenfall made the decision after the state of Schleswig Holstein decided to reduce a fee for the use of surface water to only 10% of the former amount in an attempt to create more storage capacity for excess wind power in the state. This lead to a cost reduction of roughly EUR 3.6 million for Vattenfall.
