Minister Altmaier: EEG Cuts Needed – or Energiewende Costs Will Reach Trillion Euro Mark by 2040

Without amendments to the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), the costs for the German Energiewende could add up to a trillion Euros “by the end of the thirties of this century”, Federal Environment Peter Altmaier told the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ).

Altmaier Presents Paper on Reform of Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG)

Yesterday the environment minister Peter Altmaier announced plans for a reform of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG). A key reason for the reform is increasing costs of subsidising renewable power. German transmission system operators are expected to announce a sharp rise of the EEG surcharge from 3.6 ct/kWh to reportedly 5.3 ct/kWh on 15 October 2012.

Environment Minister Altmaier Wants to Encourage Citizen Participation in Financing of New Power Lines

In an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, Environment Minister Peter Altmaier suggested to raise public acceptance for the much needed new power lines in Germany by offering the public the possibility to invest in new power lines. Such investments should be possible with small amounts of money for which an interest rate of 5% could be paid.

Environment Minister Altmaier Calls on Länder to Cut Back Wind Power Expansion

After cutting solar feed-in tariffs to rein in solar expansion this summer, wind power expansion in Germany needed attention, Environment Minister Peter Altmaier said in a morning show of the public television station ZDF.  Wind power expansion in the sixteen German states had to be coordinated  and scaled back to a “reasonable level”, he demanded.

Environment Minister Presents 10 Point Energy and Environment Programme

Yesterday, Environment Minister Peter Altmaier presented a 10-point programme entitled “With New Energy” for the remaining legislative period until the parliamentary elections in 2013. Not surprisingly, the first point of the agenda is a successful implementation of energy policy shift, which Mr Altmaier calls a key task.

Leopoldina Issues Critical Statement on the Use of Energy from Biomass

In a statement on the chances and limits of using bioenergy, the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina has come to the conclusion that in quantitative terms energy from biomass currently plays, and will in future play, only a minor role in the transition to renewables.
