Federal Council Clears German Energy Act Amendment Including New Offshore Provisions

In its last meeting in 2012, the Federal Council (Bundesrat) did not object to the third amendment of the German Energy Act (EnWG), which Parliament (Bundestag) approved in late November. The amendment contains new provisions regarding offshore wind power, in particular an offshore planning and an offshore liability regime, as well as shut-down restrictions for existing power plants and more.

Bundestag Approves 3rd Amendment of German Energy Act – Offshore Liability, Shutdown Restrictions for Conventional Power Plants, and More

Yesterday the German Bundestag (Parliament) approved the third amendment of the German Energy Act (EnWG). It contains new provisions regarding offshore wind power, in particular an offshore planning and an offshore liability regime. Besides, it gives the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) the power to order power plant operators to postpone planned shutdowns of power plants to improve the security of supply in Germany. Other new provisions relate to the exemption of  pumped storage power plants from grid charges and interruptable loads (abschaltbare Lasten).

Germany, Austria and Switzerland Started a Joint Initiative for the Development of Pumped-Storage Power Plants

On 1 May 2012 the German Federal Minister of Economics and Technology, Dr. Philipp Rösler, the Austrian Minister of Economics, Family and Youth, Reinhold Mitterlehner, and the Swiss Federal Councillor for the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications, Doris Leuthard, signed a joint declaration for the further development of pumped-storage power plants.
