BNetzA: Need for Reserve Power Capacity Almost Doubles to 4,800 MW in 2015/2016

Based on information provided by the transmission system operators (TSOs) the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) sees a need for reserve power plant capacity of 4,800 MW for the 2015/2016 winter. That would be almost twice the amount recently announced by BNetzA for the coming winter season (2,540 MW).

TSOs Activate Reserve Power Plants Due to Expected High Wind Power Input

For the first time this winter the German transmission system operators (TSOs) have activated reserve power plants in Germany and Austria as a precautionary measure to balance an expected high winter power input of 24,000 Megawatt, a spokesperson of Tennet TSO is reported to have told the news agency dpa.

Government Adopts EnWG Amendment Preventing Shutdown of Power Plants

Yesterday, the government adopted an amendment of the German Energy Act (EnWG) that shall allow the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) to order power plant operators to postpone planned shutdowns of power plants to improve the security of supply in Germany, especially in winter. The winter 2011/2012 was charcterised by an increased number of critical situations in the German power grids following the shutdown of eight nuclear power plants in 2011 in the wake of the nuclear accident in Fukushima, Japan, and the subsequent Germany energy policy shift.
