BNetzA Receives Application for Major Grid Expansion Project Following Energy Turnaround: 500kV HVDC “SuedLink”

The Federal Network Agency has received the application for federal grid planning procedure for the so-called SuedLink (South Link) power line project, a new 600 to 700 km long 500kV HVDC power line linking Wilster in Northern Germany with Grafenrheinfeld in Southern Germany. SuedLink one of the most important power line projects contained in the Federal Requirement Plan adopted in 2013 following the decision in 2011 to phase-out nuclear power by 2022.

TSOs Present Proposal for Major North South Power Line Project – Need Political Support and Postphone Road Shows

Yesterday the transmission system operators Tennet TSO and TransnetBW (TSOs) presented a proposal for the route of a major part of the so-called Suedlink extra-high voltage power line project. It shall links Wilster near Hamburg with Grafenrheinfeld in Bavaria. At the same time, the TSOs demanded clear political support for grid expansion and major power line projects such as Suedlink, announcing to postpone road shows informing the public about the project for the time being.

Tennet and 50Hertz Agree to Cooperate More Closely with Offshore Wind Park Developers

The transmission system operators responsible for the North and Baltic Sea, Tennet TSO GmbH and 50Hertz Transmission GmbH, have agreed on a closer cooperation with the working group of  offshore wind park developers (AG Betreiber) so as to promote efficiency.

German and Dutch Economics Ministers Agree on Closer Cooperation in Energy Policy Matters

Germany’s Federal Minister of Economics, Dr. Philipp Rösler, and his Dutch counterpart, Henk Kamp, agreed on a closer cooperation concerning important energy policy matters, the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) informed after a meeting of the ministers.

Mitsubishi Investment in Tennet’s German Offshore Grid Connection Projects

TenneT reported a partnership with Mitsubishi Corporation for the investment into four of Tennet’s German offshore high-voltage cable projects. This covers a contract regarding the BorWin1 and BorWin2 projects and another contract concerning the HelWin2 and DolWin2 projects. Mitsubihi’s voting interest will be 49% in return for an aggregate maximum equity commitment of EUR 240 million for the first two projects and EUR 336 million for the other two projects (EUR 576 million in total).

BNetzA: First German Transmission System Operators Certified

On Friday the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) issued the first decisions concerning the certification of electricity and gas transmission system operators (TSOs).  Two of the four TSOs in the electricity sector (50 Hertz Transmission GmbH, Amprion GmbH), and 6 gas TSOs (bayernets GmbH, GRTgaz Germany GmbH, bw nets terra GmbH, Nowega GmbH, jordgasTransport GmbH and Fluxys TENP GmbH) have been certified. Tennet TSO GmbH did not get certified.

Windreich AG and Tennet TSO GmbH Agree on Interim Grid Connection of Offshore Wind Farm Deutsche Bucht

British Wind Energy GmbH, a subsidiary of the offshore developer Windreich AG, and the transmission operator TenneT TSO GmbH have agreed on a temporary grid connection of British Wind Energy GmbH’s offshore wind farm project Deutsche Bucht and an end to a lawsuit brought by Windreich/British Wind against Tennet.

Borkum Offshore Wind Farm: Trianel Takes Legal Action Against Tennet TSO

Trianel GmbH, a joint venture of municipal and regional utilitities, announced that it brought legal action against Tennet TSO GmbH, because of delays concerning the connection of the offshore wind park Borkum allegedly caused by Tennet. The company also called for amendments of a bill recently adopted by the German government that shall help to accelerate the construction and grid connection of offshore wind farms, but generally welcomed it.

Statnett, Tennet and KfW Reach Agreement to Build Electricity Interconnector Between Germany and Norway

Statnett, the Norwegian Transmission System Operator (TSO), the German TSO Tennet and the state-owned German KfW Development Bank (KfW) have agreed to team up as equity partners in a project set up to develop and construct a subsea interconnector between Germany and Norway, with Statnett holding 50 %, KfW at least 25 % and the remaining interest held by Tennet, Statnett announced. Tennet said an agreement was being drafted and should be signed in September 2012. The company confirmed the involvement of KfW in the project it estimated to cost between EUR 1 billion to EUR 1.5 billion, but did not further specify the financial commitments of the partners. Tennet also said a second interconnector was planned at a later stage.

Tennet Warns Chancellery and Federal Ministries of Difficulties for Offshore Grid Connection

In a letter to the Chancellery, the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMU), TenneT TSO GmbH informed that offshore grid connections in the North Sea are no longer desirable and possible at the current rate and in the current form.
